Dual-income families rise amid economic slump in 2014

The number of families where both the husband and wife work increased in 2014 amid the protracted economic slump. Some 5.18 million households had dual incomes, accounting for 43.9 percent of all South Korean married couple households, which is also up 2.6 percent from 5.05 million tallied the year before. The latest numbers showed that there was a noticeable increase in dual income earners for households headed by people in their 50s and 60s(June 30, 2015, Yonhap ).

Fitch maintains 'AA-' sovereign ratings on S. Korea

Global credit appraiser Fitch Ratings said that it is maintaining its present sovereign ratings on South Korea, reflecting the country's macro-economic performance and solid external balances. Fitch retained its ratings on Asia's No. 4 economy at "AA-," the fourth-highest investment grade, and also kept its rating outlook at "stable." The ratings and outlook remain unchanged from September 2012(July 13, 2015, Yonhap).

S. Korea's growth to slip to 2.6 pct this year

A leading South Korean think tank sharply lowered its 2015 forecast of the economy's growth, citing falling exports and the fallout from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) outbreak. In its latest economic outlook, the LG Economic Research Institute revised down its growth prediction to 2.6 percent from an earlier 3 percent estimate made three months ago. Half of conglomerates suffer from high debt

Nearly half of South Korea's large industrial groups are suffering from chronic financial trouble due to high levels of debt. Out of 48 non-financial business groups on an antitrust watchlist, 23 posted a debt ratio of more than 200 percent on a consolidated basis as of end-2014. Twenty one of them saw the ratio hit 200 percent for three straight years.(July 19, 2015, Yonhap).

Local banks reduce loans to large companies

South Korea's major banks reduced loans to large companies over the past year as they became more reluctant to lend to them amid a series of massive bankruptcies. Six lenders extended a combined 95.7 trillion won($83.5 billion) in loans to large business at the end of June, down 8.5 percent from 104.7 trillion won a year earlier. Instead, the lenders increased loans for mid- and small-sized enterprises to 262.8 trillion won as of end-June, up 8.7 percent from 241.8 trillion won the previous year(Korea Herald, 2015.7.19.).

Large caps' Q2 earnings miss market estimates

Major listed firms posted weaker-than-expected earnings in the second quarter, dampening investor sentiment amid a capital outflow ahead of a looming U.S. interest hike. Half of 38 companies with market capitalization over 1 trillion won(US$856.16 million) chalked up April-June earnings that missed market estimates(July 28, 2015, Yonhap).

Top 30 biz groups' profitability tumbles in 2014

South Korea's leading business groups saw their profitability plunge in 2014 as major exporters grappled with a double whammy of feeble global demand and weak domestic consumption. The combined operating profit of the nation's 30 largest conglomerates by assets came to 57.56 trillion won (US$49.28 billion) last year, down 34.8 percent from 2010(July 28, 2105, Yonhap).

S. Korean banks' loan delinquency rate drops

The delinquency rate of loans extended by banks dropped to the lowest level since the global financial crisis in June amid a low rate trend. The average delinquency rate of bank loans stood at 0.61 percent at the end of June, down 0.19 percentage point from a month earlier, the largest monthly fall since December last year when it lost 0.33 percentage point. The overdue rates of corporate debt declined 0.27 percentage point on-month to 0.76 percent, with those for household loans falling 0.1 percentage point to 0.42 percent. The outstanding amount of won-denominated bank loans came in at 1,289.7 trillion won as of end-June. Those extended to households reached 526 trillion won, while corporate loans gained 2.2 trillion won up to 733 trillion won(July 29, 2015, Yonhap).

Top 10 conglomerates' overseas sales down 4.6 pct in 2014

South Korea's top 10 business groups' exports fell 4.6 percent on-year in 2014, with only three experiencing an increase in overseas sales. The combined revenue from exports for the conglomerates came to 546.4 trillion won(US$466 billion) last year, compared to 573.1 trillion won posted in 2013. The overseas market was responsible for 51.1 percent of the groups' combined revenue in 2014, down 2.2 percentage points from 53.3 percent posted a year earlier.
