S. Korea's exports plunge 10.9 pct on-year in May
South Korea's exports posted their biggest drop in almost six years in May, though its trade surplus expanded as imports shrank at a faster pace. In May, the country's overall outbound shipments came to US$42.39 billion, down 10.9 percent from the same month last year. It was the largest on-year decline since a 20.9 percent plunge in August 2009(June 1, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's national debt tops 1,200 tln won mark in 2014
South Korea's national debt surpassed the 1,200 trillion won(US$1.08 trillion) mark in 2014 due to increased fiscal spending for the economic recovery and a rise in pension payments for government employees and service members. Gross national debt, including appropriations for pension payments, stood at 1,212.7 trillion won last year, up 94.8 trillion won from the previous year, according to the report by the finance ministry submitted to the National Assembly(May 29, 2015, Yonhap).
OECD cuts S. Korea's 2015 growth outlook to 3 pct
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) downgraded South Korea's 2015 economic growth outlook due to the country's high level of household debt and weakening exports. In its latest Economic Outlook report, the Paris-based organization said that South Korea's gross domestic product(GDP) will likely grow 3 percent this year, down from its previous estimate of 3.8 percent announced in November. The annual growth number represents a contraction from the 3.3 percent expansion reached in 2014(June 3, 2015, Yonhap).
Major firms' capex to rise 15 pct this year
Major South Korean companies are expected to increase their capital expenditures by nearly 15 percent in 2015 from last year despite the economy's prolonged weakness. Last year's actual facility investments totaled 136.9 trillion won, up 5.1 percent from the previous year, according to the bank(June 7, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's recovery slower than major economies
South Korea's macroeconomic conditions have been recovering at a slower pace than other major countries since the global financial crisis in the late 2000s. South Korea posted a marked decline in growth rates for private spending, imports, exports, stock and housing markets. South Korea's heavy dependence on external markets might be the reason for its relatively poor economic performance over the past years, which could offset the effect of its own expansionary monetary policies(June 16, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's rate cut forecast to prop up growth
South Korea's interest rate cut is expected to help bolster the struggling economy and resuscitate consumer confidence hit by the outbreak of a potentially fatal respiratory disease. In a monthly policy meeting, the central Bank of Korea slashed the base rate by a quarter percentage point to a record low of 1.5 percent in a bid to help ease the fallout of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) outbreak on Asia's fourth-largest economy(June 11, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's savings rate hits 17-year high
South Korea's savings rate hit a 17-year high in the first quarter of this year, weakening consumption that has been cited for sluggish economic growth. The national savings rate, which subtracts all consumption costs and expenditures from the gross national disposable income, stood at 36.5 percent in the January-March period, up 1.5 percentage points from 35 percent a year earlier. The savings rate includes household, corporate and government numbers. It is also the highest reading since 37.2 percent reached in the third quarter of 1998. South Korea's savings rate peaked at 41.7 percent in 1988 and dipped to a low of 31.8 percent in 2002.(June 23, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's tax revenue rises on more corporate taxes
South Korea's tax revenue rose in the first four months of 2015 from a year earlier, helped by more taxes collected from businesses. The rise in corporate taxes is linked to better earnings generated by many companies last year. During the four-month period, corporate tax earnings reached 17.9 trillion won from 15.8 trillion won tallied the year before(June 23, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea's growth in last 10 years 6th highest among OECD members
South Korea's economic growth rate in the last 10 years was the sixth highest among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) members. The Asia's fourth-largest economy grew at an average of 3.7 percent annually from 2005 to 2014. This is about 2.5 times higher than the average for the 34-member OECD that stood at just 1.5 percent. In 2014, the OECD said the country's per capita GDP stood at $33,657(June 29, 2015, Yonhap).
S. Korea cuts 2015 growth outlook to 3.1 pct
South Korea lowered its 2015 economic growth outlook to 3.1 percent, citing slumping exports and the negative impact of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) outbreak. The revised estimate represents a drop from the 3.8 percent gain predicted late last year and is lower than the 3.3 percent growth reached in 2014. For 2016, the finance ministry predicted the economy will grow 3.5 percent(June 25, 2015, Yonhap).
